I’m sure you’ve heard how important it is to delegate. I suggest learning the art of delegation is one of the most effective business management habits you can develop. Having supported professionals, entrepreneurs, and small business owners for more than 25 years, I’ve witnessed the results of smart delegation first hand.
There’s more to delegating than handing off your to do list. Learning to ask for what you want, providing context enabling your assistant to be proactive, and understanding what is and is not high value work is often the missing pieces to effective delegation. My free report explains this and more in detail. Get it here.
One of the most common excuses for not delegating is, “I can get it done faster than the time it would take to delegate it to someone else.” There’s more than one reason this is misguided thinking and pure myth.
Let’s begin with – 1 hour out of 1 day and 1 task it takes you 30 minutes every day to complete. Right off the bat, it is very likely the assistant to whom you’re delegating will perform the task faster, better, and more efficiently – and will learn your preferences much faster than you expect. After all, you will only delegate to an assistant that is a great fit.
By INVESTING 1 hour to delegate, YOUR RETURN is:
- 150 minutes a week (30 minutes x 5 days)
- 600 minutes a month (150 minutes x 4 weeks)
- 7,200 minutes a year (600 minutes x 12 months)
- 120 hours – and that is the equivalent of 3 forty-hour work weeks
Repeat for 2 tasks and you’ve just added 6 forty-hour work weeks (14,400 minutes a year.) Imagine your return when delegating even more. Myth busted. Mic drop.
Where would you use that time? Will you get clearer on your business plan, have a richer personal life, take a long overdue vacation?
Taking the lone ranger approach to business is a leading cause of why business growth is often slower than it has to be. Delegating gives you room to execute your business plan more effectively. I hope this is an ah-ha moment that gets you on your feet doing a happy dance.
Did you know, suffering day after day with inefficient processes, straining to maintain focus, stressed by overwhelming work habits – is not unique to you? Many small business owners are in the same boat. It’s nothing to be embarrassed about. All businesses need support and those who learn the art of delegation win!
